Airpods Motorcycle Helmet: Are They a Good Fit?

If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, you’re probably always looking for ways to make your rides more enjoyable. One great way to do that is by using AirPods Pro while you’re on the road. However, the question is does AirPods Pro fit within your motorcycle helmet?

To figure that out, we did a test to find out if AirPods help cancels the noise of wind and exhaust.

Our main test is based on the following aspects.

  • Can I wear these with my helmet on? Wouldn’t that make them uneasy?
  • Would they be effective in canceling wind and engine noise?
  • Are these compatible with the Siri/Google Assistant system?

In conclusion, the Airpods Pro perform their job and are pretty good at blocking noise, about on par with the finest foam earplugs when worn properly.
But not all helmets are compatible, and they might be difficult to put on.

Sometimes they can even squeak or give off an unpleasant feedback effect when they rub up against the helmet shell.

In the end, I decided to convert to bespoke earplugs since they were more cost-effective, more comfortable, and simpler to use while wearing a helmet.

I rode a motorbike while testing the AirPods Pro, so I brought the necessary equipment.

Gear I wear

Shoei RF-1400 Helmet
The bike is a BMW R1200S with a custom Laser exhaust system and baffles.
It’s a Google Pixel 3A (not an iPhone!
Tested at speeds of 65 mph (110 km/h) (40-65 mph)
The motorbike has an aftermarket exhaust system and is a 1170cc air/oil-cooled twin. Noise-wise, it’s on par with a powerful V-twin engine when revved to about 10,000 rpm.

I’ve ridden and owned a wide variety of motorbikes, and this one is about as noisy as others I’ve ridden before, including twin-cylinder and liter-class four-cylinder bikes with performance exhaust systems, but with the baffles in place.

Can I use the AirPods Pro microphone while wearing a motorcycle helmet?

A reader emailed me asking if it’s possible to utilize the AirPods’ mics while sporting a motorcycle helmet

Simply said, no, the AirPods Pro microphone does not function while wearing a motorcycle helmet.

I’ve tried talking on the phone while walking around and driving, but I can’t be heard. Even shouting “OK, GOOGLE!” almost to the top of my lungs didn’t work (this was, of course, humorously unrealistic).

The microphone’s effectiveness is heavily dependent on the wearer’s head size and the helmet’s fit. However, at first glance, the microphone seems to be either useless or significantly less useful than a Sena headset.

Can I wear Airpods with my helmet on? Wouldn’t that make the wearing uneasy?

Yes, you can wear headphones with a helmet on. However, it is important to make sure that the headphones are the right size and fit for your head. Otherwise, they may be uncomfortable to wear. Additionally, you want to make sure that the headphones are not too bulky so that they do not interfere with the fit of the helmet.

Would Airpods be effective in canceling wind and engine noise?

If you’re looking for a way to cancel out wind and engine noise while you’re on the go, Airpods may be a good option for you. While they’re not designed specifically for this purpose, their noise-cancelling capabilities can help to reduce the amount of background noise you hear. Additionally, the snug fit of Airpods can help to create a seal that blocks out some of the noise.

Are these compatible with the Siri/Google Assistant system?

Yes, but they do perform well during our test. We found that the airpods were able to connect to the Siri/Google Assistant system and perform basic tasks such as playing music and making phone calls. However, we did notice some lag when using the airpods with the Siri/Google Assistant system. Overall, the airpods are compatible with the Siri/Google Assistant system, but they don’t perform as well as other devices that are designed specifically for use with the system.

What are some motorcycle helmets that go well with Airpods

There are a few motorcycle helmets that go well with Airpods. The first is the Bell Qualifier DLX Helmet. This helmet has a built-in Bluetooth system that is compatible with Airpods. It also has a hands-free calling feature, so you can use your Airpods to make calls while you’re on the road. The second helmet is the Sena Cavalry Half Helmet. This helmet also has a Bluetooth system that is compatible with Airpods. It has a built-in FM radio, so you can listen to music or podcasts while you’re riding. The third helmet is the Schuberth C3 Pro Helmet. This helmet has a built-in Bluetooth system that is compatible with Airpods. It also has noise-cancelling technology, so you can enjoy your music or podcasts without being distracted by outside noise.
